Dolly Parton |
It would be easy to imagine a country music legend Dolly Parton would look very different when he is alone at home. No complicated clothes or shine, without stunning wigs and false nails ... gee, to end soon, when the spotlight away from it could be high and flat chest.
Not so, says Parton.
''Honey, if you come to my door at 8 am, what you would see at the moment is the same as you see, 365 days a year,''he says. ''At this time you would see the wig, the brightness and nine inch nails.''
What if you knock on your door even earlier?
''Do not open the door,''Parton responds with his characteristic laugh of joy. Today, of course, Parton is far from their usual areas of Tennessee. Two weeks before Christmas and the singer 65 years of age is in an elegant Park Avenue, New York, to discuss his new film,''Joyful Noise.''She is exactly what is expected to be the legendary Dolly Parton: a small woman in white pants, white blouse with sequins and a towering blonde wig. Her waist is so short that we could ceñirla with both hands. It also comes in high-heeled shoes, ruby red lipstick and long nails square with the French manicure.
Life is strange to Parton, who has one of the most passionate fan bases in country music. And one of the most eccentric.
''I have a farm in Nashville,''he says,''and one day, back in the '70s, returned home at the gate and found a box with a baby inside. I just recorded the song 'Jolene' (1973) and the note said: 'It's called Jolene. I called as well for you so please take care of it.'''
Parton laughs.
''I called child services agency,''he adds. ''Immediately! Can you you believe it?''
Scheduled for release across the United States on 13 January,''Joyful Noise''is the first big film since''Parton Straight Talk''(1992). Here we will see how G.G. Sparrow, a singer in the choir of a church in a small town. Sparrow is a progressive woman and would like the choir sing and rap type rock uplifting. However, the choir director (Queen Latifah) is old-fashioned and sees no need for anything beyond the spiritual classics. A national competition of choirs will offer new opportunities, but also bring to light the conflict between the two ways of thinking.
''I wanted to have to inspire people with this film,''reveals Parton. ''But for me it was really inspiring to work with Queen Latifah. Never forget the first day in the studio. It was the first time we met in person and we just got the microphone and started jamming and singing.
''I thought, 'I really love it.'''
''First we talked on the phone how I felt about this idea of the film and the script,''recalled Latifah separate interview. ''I was excited and she was excited to work together. It was taken for granted that we were going to make this movie ... I love the attitude of saying things as they are.''
''Back in my people always say things as they are,''Parton said when told Latifah's comment. ''Let's be honest here. We gather in a room with several people in Hollywood and is simply not the thing that clicked. We did another click. We were not playing each other, simply we clicked from the beginning.''
That's a lot more than can be said of his characters. The struggle for the soul of the chorus comes to a confrontation that is not recommended for the faint of heart. Fly nails are pulled hairs and say unkind things about plastic surgery Parton.
''That fight was fun,''Parton said,''and it shows on the screen. We shot for a day and by the end of the day we were thoroughly. I was exhausted but willing to keep giving. We even shot on the ground, gliding over the spaghetti. It was fun.''
As to comments about their appearance, Parton were relieves with a laugh. I had already heard them all.
''The truth is that I have always based my appearance in the town slut,''says the singer. ''When I was young, in my hometown was a lady who worked the streets. I thought it was the most beautiful thing in the world. I can not tell his name, but Sufficient to know that it was absolutely beautiful. I asked them all if it was not pretty, but I always responded that it was a loss.
''That's when I knew I wanted to have nice things,''continues. ''But when I was little I could not give us that luxury. However, I wanted to look good, so I picked berries and made my lips. And with matches painted my eyebrows and I did my makeup.
''My grandfather was a preacher and did team with my dad,''continues. ''None of them wanted me to wear makeup, but could not get it out or borrármelo.
''I was very rebellious,''concludes Parton. ''And I received many beatings simply be myself.''
Dolly Rebecca Parton was one of the twelve children of Robert Lee Parton, snuff farmer, and his wife Avie Lee. She grew up in a one-room cabin in Locust Ridge, Tennessee. However, his ticket out would always be his voice. At age 12 he was already singing on television in Knoxville and, at 13, had engraved on a small label and appeared in''The Grand Ole Opry.''
In 1964, Parton finished high school and moved to Nashville to start his career as a country singer. At the same time fell in love with Carl Dean, who owned a paving business. They married in 1966 and married to date.
In 1967 caught the attention of Porter Wagoner, star of country music veteran, who signed her to appear on her show. He directed her as a singer and songwriter, over the seven years they spent together touring and performing in the show. They also recorded a series of duets that captured first place in the charts and became the most popular duet Nashville.
In 1973-1974, the duo broke up when Parton wanted to pursue a solo career. In response to some resentment on the part of Wagoner, she wrote,''I Will Always Love You''(1974), testimony of his undying affection for him, he came to the top of the popularity charts country music.
In his solo career was a long string of successes and its combination of sex appeal and cheerful country humor caught the attention of Hollywood. She had her own television series,''Dolly''(1976) and made her film debut with''Nine to Five''(1980), whose title song earned him an Oscar nomination. She was nominated again for''Travelin 'Through,''Transamerica''composite''(2005).
Among his later films are''The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas''(1982),''''Rhinestone (1984) and''Steel Magnolias''(1989). And recently lent his voice to Dolly Gone,''the animated film Gnomeo & Juliet''(2011).
''I had not done a live movie for some time because they had the chance,''she says frankly. ''Nobody sent me any good in recent years. I think the last big movie that I was 'Straight Talk.' I'm a little big for playing roles of young and too young to play something other than a glamorous grandmother.''
Not that I miss things to do. Parton still has a tremendous appeal both on tour and on recordings and has also proved a shrewd businesswoman. In 1986, Dolly Parton Enterprises opened its theme park Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It is designed as a tribute to his childhood in the Smoky Mountains, as well as an effort to create jobs in the community. It has become one of the most popular attractions in the region.
She could be easily removed from country music to manage their commercial interests, but Parton says she's never going to retire.
''I love everything I do,''he says. ''My music is the reason you enjoy Dollywood and everything else. Frankly, the music remains the most important thing for me. It was a song that got me out of the Smoky Mountains.
''God has been good to me,''continues Parton. ''Many of my friends my age are not doing much. I feel like I'm going to start. I am having a new dream.''
In a career spanning over 50 years now, she has had her ups and downs and has learned to go with the flow.
''My basic motto in life is that if you want a rainbow, then we must endure the rain,''summarizes Parton.
In maintaining its characteristic features in their autumn years, she does not mind admitting that it has received some help.
''I always had nice breasts,''says Parton. ''I've fixed the slightly as the years have passed.''
He also learned to adapt their lifestyle as time passed.
''I stay thin because I starve,''Parton reveals very removed from the sentence. ''I went up a lot of weight when I entered adulthood and realized I could no longer eat like a peasant girl.
''Now I'm just a little thing.''
How short is your waist, exactly?
''That depends on what you're eating,''answered laughing. ''I assure you it will be bigger after Christmas.''
Although he has 65 years, retirement is not on your agenda and never will be.
''I just go on tour,''indicates Parton. ''I love being on the road. As to slow down, I'm like the Energizer Bunny, but Playboy version!''
