Genesee Valley did what it does best to perfection.
Three straight bunts to start the game keyed a three-run first inning for No. 10 Genesee Valley in Wednesday’s 4-3 win over No. 7 Avoca to advance to the Section V, Class D1 quarterfinals.
“We bunted a lot,” said Genesee Valley coach Lisa Clark.
Tali Morse led off the game with a bunt single and Emily Chamberlain followed with a sacrifice. Lindsey Kamrowski also bunted and the first of eight Avoca errors put two runners on with one out.
Taylor Waite drove in the first run with a single and Morgan Glover made it 2-0 with an RBI bunt single. Avoca’s second error of the inning on a ball hit by Carena Humphrey allowed the Lady Jaguars’ third run to score.
Avoca (5-10) eventually tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but two more errors in the seventh helped Genesee Valley score the game-winner.
Chamberlain hit a dribbler between pitcher Joelle Robords and first base that scored Kristen Swann with the go-ahead run for the Lady Jaguars.
Waite threw a six-hitter for the win, striking out five and walking none.
Robords only allowed five hits and struck out five, but four walks and the fielding miscues were too much to overcome for Avoca.
“Taylor pitched well, but our defense wasn’t exactly special either,” said Clark. “If we commit three errors next game against Elba, we’ll get beat.”
Genesee Valley (4-11) will play at No. 2 Elba on Friday in the D1 quarterfinals.
