Khaw Boon Wan Blog

Khaw Boon Wan Blog
National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan said his new appointment in the ministry did not make him a "masochist".

In his first blog entry under his new portfolio, called "Housing Matters", Mr Khaw acknowledged that housing was politically hot and there were genuine problems on the ground.

At his Meet-The-People Sessions, 70 per cent of the appeals were for housing.

Mr Khaw also admitted that he would have been very comfortable staying at the Health Ministry and he still had meaningful programmes to launch or complete.

But he felt that he could be more useful in the National Development Ministry.

Mr Khaw said he had received many suggestions and feedback, with several people advising him "not to try to please all", as it would fail. For example, many people wanted him to bring property prices down but others also warned him not to do so.

He said he was realistic about what could be done and the key was to prioritise and set realistic goals.

For now, Mr Khaw said he would focus on the housing needs of groups like young couples, divorcees with children and low-income families. Mr Khaw said he would continue to consult widely, with experts, customers, industry players and Singaporeans.

He added that he would use all communications platforms available, both online and offline.
