Maria Goretti

Wednesday is the feast day of St. Maria Goretti, the patroness of modern youth and a martyr of the Universal Church. A commemorative mass officiated by Bishop Jose Manguiran was held in her honor last Sunday, July 3, at the St. Maria Goretti Parish in Ermita, Manila. A procession was held after the mass. Wednesday, a solemn mass will be celebrated in honor of the Italian saint at 6 p.m.
In Nettuno, Italy, which is near her birthplace, hundreds of pilgrims and devotees traditionally gather on her feast day at her major shrine, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Graces and St. Maria Goretti. Born in 1890 in Italy, St. Maria was known for her great faith, hatred for sin, forgiving heart, and love for God. She was a pious girl and was hailed a martyr for her defense of the virtue of purity. St. Maria died in 1902 after she was stabbed by her neighbor, Alessandro Serenelli, who tried to rape her. Bustling economy
President Aquino Tuesday hailed the record-high stock market rally and expressed hope that the all-share index will reach 6,000. The President cited that market upsurge was a vote of investor confidence on the bustling Philippine economy. “I’m very glad.
It’s again a symbol of the confidence of the business community, both foreign and domestic have expressed in the continued growth of our economy,” the President said in a press conference at the 113th founding anniversary of the Department of Foreign Affairs. “Especially given the turn of events that has happened in the Middle East and Japan, that is really heartwarming,” he added. Downgraded
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) lowered Tuesday the alert level status at Taal Volcano from 2 to 1 due to a significant decline in its volcanic and seismic activities.
Phivolcs noted that 11 weeks after Taal Volcano’s alert status was raised from Level 1 to 2 last April 9, significant decrease in the number of volcanic earthquakes, including hydrothermal and steaming activities were observed.
With the lowering of Taal Volcano’s alert status, Phivolcs said “a large hazardous eruption is now less probable within the immediate future.” (Ellalyn de Vera)
LPAs spotted
Two low pressure areas (LPAs) continued to threaten the country with widespread rains that could trigger flashfloods and landslides in the eastern section of Central and Southern Luzon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned Tuesday. One of the LPAs was located at 590 kilometers (km) northeast of Virac, Catanduanes, while another LPA was spotted 190 kms east-northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar.
PAGASA said the weather disturbance is embedded along the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ)--the convergence of northeasterly winds and southwesterly winds, which is an ingredient for a tropical cyclone. Forecasters said that the LPA has a slight chance of intensifying into a tropical depression. (Ellalyn de Vera)
