I know I’ve been posting a lot on upcoming Twdramas lately, so I’ll do a round-up post sometime soon.
Mike He is an extremely busy man (Dear Mike: how ’bout you focus less on quantity and more on quality for once, hmm? Break the curse where the only good dramas you star in are the ones in which Rainie Yang also stars?). Directly after finishing filming Sunshine Day with Janine Chang,which should premier sometime this month or next month, he’s filming Mei Le, Go! with Cyndi Wang.
Mei Le, Go! is based on a novel and is a romance set in the world of a bakery shop. Cyndi Wang is a bakery shop owner, while Mike He is a famous music producer and award-winning musician. Based on the character descriptions and the roles these actors have played in the past, I’m going to guess that Cyndi’s character is sweet-tempered but stubborn, while Mike’s is high-maintenance and demanding, and of course gradually falls for Cyndi’s quiet charms.
2010 world champion pastry chef Hsu Yen-Wu was invited to be a consultant for the drama. Cyndi has been practicing baking and learning basic skills such as kneading dough for her role, and all I can say is, that better be some good stuff that she bakes, because apparently Mike’s music-producer character is initially drawn to her because her bread is so delicious that it inspires his music.
Baking-themed dramas seem quite the trend these days – Baker King was one of the Kdrama smash hits of last year, and SETTV plans to film a bakery-centered drama sometime in 2011, though presumably it won’t overlap with Mei Le, Go!
I am cautiously hopeful about this drama, partly because I’ve always enjoyed Cyndi Wang’s dramas in the past (though her weakest one was definitely the most recent one, Momo Lovein 2009). Mike He’s track record as far as drama choices is erratic at best – despite being in a drama every year for the past four or five years, he hasn’t had a hit since 2007′s Why Why Love, and his last drama, Calling for Love (which certainly left me cold)received particularly low ratings. Somewhat hilariously, his popularity has declined enough (oh Mike, how far you’ve fallen!) that GTV, the network sponsoring this drama, felt the need to defend their choice of him as star, emphasizing, “(We’re) very happy to have Mike He be in this drama, we especially asked the original novel author (單飛雪) to modify the script to fit his character.”
If this and Sunshine Day both turn out to be disappointments, I will officially label Mike as “drama actor with the worst taste in acting projects ever” and eschew all his future dramas. He’s had exactly three good dramas: Devil Beside You, Why Why Love, and Love Contract (though that last is flawed), and the rest have been either rubbish or decent-but-poorly-rated. On the bright side, Cyndi and Mike are both actors who are particularly good at creating chemistry with their co-stars, so I’m hoping that kicks in in this drama also. And whatever else, there should be a lot of cuteness.
