New Zealand isn’t the only country who occasionally makes a mistake with a stamp and decides to just live with it; it happens here as well. Late last week, the philatelist magazine, Linn’s Stamp News, discovered that the new “Lady Liberty” stamp, issued recently by the US Postal Service, features an image not of the Statue of Liberty in New York, but its shorter, newer replica in Las Vegas, which stands outside of the New York-New York Hotel and Casino. Doing some very smart sleuthing, the magazine discovered that the photo had been purchased from a photographer who had also been shooting stock photography for Getty Images of the same Liberty fake. After the news got out, the Postal Service wiped the embarrassing egg off their collective faces and decided to just keep it as is, instead of scrapping the stamp altogether. As they later told the NY Times, they regret the error and will be “re-examining our processes to prevent this situation from happening in the future.”
