Chiam See Tong

The Singapore People's Party Secretary General Chiam See Tong said that the party is overwhelmed by the reception it has received from Bishan residents.

Speaking to reporters after visiting Bishan Street 11, Mr Chiam said that when he first announced that he was contesting in Bishan Toa-Payoh GRC, many of his friends tried to discourage him from doing so.

But after seeing the welcome given to the SPP, he said he has no regrets leaving his stronghold of Potong Pasir to contest in the GRC.

Mr Chiam said many Bishan residents told him that they want an alternative voice in Parliament.

Mr Chiam also responded to Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng's comments on why he didn't ask more questions in Parliament on security lapses after Mas Selamat's escape.

He said: "The reason why I did not ask more questions is because we were waiting for the elections and we believe in accountability. I want Minister Wong Kan Seng to account to the people of Bishan...he has not given a full account of the debacle he's made. And we would like him to account to the voters at Bishan and we have given him plenty of opportunities to do so."
