Basketball (W): Queen’s pushes No. 4 Carleton to overtime, fall 66-65
OTTAWA (January 29, 2011) - Desperate for a win, the Queen’s Gaels women’s basketball team pushed the No. 4 Carleton Ravens to the limit, but fell short losing 66-65 in a heartbreaking overtime loss in Ottawa on Saturday.
Kingston’s Liz Boag posted a career high 17 points in the loss while Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., led both teams in scoring posting 21 points for the Gaels.
Jill Wheat of Marwayne, Alta. registered 16 boards in the contest and was the games only double digit rebounder
The loss was the Gaels sixth straight and puts their record at 3-14 and they are in seventh place of the OUA East Division. Sixth place Laurentian, who holds the final playoff position in the East, lost 66-53 to Toronto on Saturday and maintain their two point lead on the Gaels.
Three Ravens finished with double digits, led by Ashleigh Cleary of Kemptville, Ont., who recorded 17 points and eight rebounds.
Queen'shad the advantage on the boards, grabbing 51 rebounds to Carleton’s 46.
The Gaels jumped out to an early lead but the Ravens battled back and a successful shot by Cleary at the buzzer tied the game at 18 after the first 10 minutes of play.
The Gaels found success at the three-point line in the second, thanks in large part to Moore, who sits fifth in OUA scoring. She had the hot hand for Queen’s, going 4-for-4 from beyond the arc and scoring 15 first-half points.
With her help, the Gaels went up by as much as nine in the second quarter. A late three by Krista Van Slingerland of Waterloo, Ont., pulled the Ravens within three at the half, down 36-33.
A couple of quick baskets by the Ravens to open the third gave them the lead, which they would maintain for the entire quarter, going into the fourth up 49-45.
Carleton continued to build on its momentum and would go up by as much as eight in the fourth. But the Gaels crept back into the game and thanks to some successful foul shots with the clock winding down, they tied the game at 59 and forced overtime.
With the game tied at 65 and 14 seconds on the clock, Raven Kendall MacLeod of Brockville, Ont., made one of two foul shots, giving Carleton a one-point lead. Queen’s was unable to get the winning basket in the dying seconds, giving the Ravens the win.
Carleton’s record now stands at 15-2 for first place in the OUA East.
The Gaels return home next weekend looking to break their six game losing streak against the Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday (Feb. 4) and Ryerson Rams on Saturday (Feb. 5). Both games tip off at 6:00pm inside the Athletics and Recreation Centre (ARC) on campus at Queen’s University.
NOTES: Boag in her first season with the Gaels previous career high came back on November 27 vs. Western... Tonight, Boag was seven of 10 from th field and three of four from behind the three-point arc.
Hockey (M): Gaels drop 3-2 overtime decision to Nipissing
NORTH BAY, Ont. (January 29, 2011) - Despite a strong three period effort, the Queen's Gaels could not hold on as they lost 3-2 in overtime to the Nippising Lakers in OUA men’s hockey.
The Gaels got a strong start and were the first to score on Brandon Perry's (Timmins, Ont.) first goal of the season. The Gaels outshot Nipissing by a 12-7 mark in the first.
Nipissing would even the score in the a closely contested second period. Grant McGee of Mississauga, Ont. found a way past David Aime of Clandeboyne, Man. for his first of two goals in this game. Both goaltenders fared well in the second as McGee's goal was the only one in the period which saw both teams combine for 23 shots.
The third period was much like the second for Nipissing as McGee's ninth goal of the season gave them a one goal lead. It wouldn't be enough for them to seal the win however as Jonathon Lawrance of Steinbach, Man., would score an unassisted goal for the Gaels ten minutes after the Lakers pulled into the lead to force overtime.
A penalty halfway through overtime would prove costly to Queen's as Paul Cianfrini of Dundas, Ont. put the game winner past Aime 30 seconds for the penalty expired.
Toronto's Daniel Mandel and Brendan Bureau of Amherstview, Ont., each added an assist on Perry's goal in the first. Aime continued the Gaels' strong goaltending this weekend with a 35 save performance. The unassisted goal was Lawrance's second in in five games as he scored an unassisted game winner against Toronto on January 14.
The Gaels will return to action on February 4 when they take on the Ryerson Rams in Kingston at the Memorial Centre. Puck drop is set for 8:30 pm.

Carleton’s Will Manigat of Montreal was the game’s leading scorer with 16 points. Cole Hobin of Ashton, Ont., and Philip Scrubb of Richmond, B.C., each registered 12 points in the win.
Carleton would hold a 40-14 lead at halftime and while the Gaels offense would score 13 points in the third quarter, the Ravens poured it on with 24 of their own. Carleton would go on to win the fourth quarter 17-14 and close with an easy 81-41 win.
