Presidential spokesman Julian Aldrin Pasha said the president was saddened by the news of Zainuddin's death.
“He felt sorry for the loss, especially to Zainuddin’s family,” Julian said at a press conference at the State Palace.
Julian added he could not yet confirm whether Yudhoyono would travel to Zainuddin’s house to pay his respects.
“The president has been informed about it, but I cannot confirm if he will go,” he said.
Zainuddin died on Tuesday at the age of 60. His family said he died of a heart attack.
A number of politicians and state officials have already paid their respects to the departed, including Golkar official Akbar Tandjung. Vice President Boediono and Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo were also scheduled to appear at the charismatic cleric's house.
