The hotel maid who accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault was tape recorded on the phone within a day of the attack telling a man in prison, something like “Don’t worry, this guy has a lot of money. I know what I’m doing,” according to a source who spoke to The New York Times. This comes on top of this revelation, which piggy-bagged offyesterday’s bombshell that she had been dishonest about details in her asylum application from Guinea, including a gang rape. The accuser also had several shady deposits into her bank account, totaling near $100,000, from various men.
But wait, there’s more: The New York Postheadline this morning is “DSK MAID A HOOKER.” Sources tell the tabloid the accuser works as a prostitute in the hotel, cleaning rooms but also sleeping with guests. The paper quoted a source “close to the investigation” who said, “There is information . . . of her getting extraordinary tips, if you know what I mean. And it’s not for bringing extra f**king towels.” It should be noted, however, that the New York Times has not reported that the accuser is a prostitute, only the Post.
Strauss-Kahn has argued from the beginning that what happened between them was consensual and that the accuser was a prostitute. His lawyers refused to comment to the Post whether he paid this woman for sex. She could be a sex worker who consented, a sex worker who didn’t consent, or just a hotel maid whose character is being tarnished by a defense source. We don’t know. (I am waiting for more reputable newspapers to suss that information out.) In any case, it has to be said that a prostitute can still be sexually assaulted. Let’s not lose sight of the fact that she may not be what we perceive to be a “good victim,” but she could still be a victim.
