The National Day Parade (NDP) 2011 committee has decided not to use the controversial ‘Funpack song’ in the NDP following a massive outcry from netizens.
In a short statement posted on its Facebook a few hours ago, NDEEPS said:
“Dear Fellow Singaporeans, the NDP 2011 Committee would like to sincerely thank everyone for their feedback. After careful consideration, we have decided not to use the “Funpack Song” for NDP, and are no longer seeking adaptation rights for “Bad Romance”. We are committed towards making NDP 2011 a memorable event for all Singaporeans on 9 Aug and will always welcome your feedback. Majulah, the Singapore Spirit!”
The embarassing U-turn caused more brick-bats to be thrown at the organizers with some asking the amount of money which has gone down the drain in paying for the rights to play the song publicly.
Hong Wei Lun said sarcastically:
“No wars to fight, no low level conflicts to jostle in, no catastrophe to rescue for. Just one NDP a year and SAF screws up the song.”
Dexter Wong added:
“Lucky we throw stones at the govt, or else SG will be sue silly by Lady Gaga. Now how about the other cringe worthy MRT song?”
Lee Rou Xuan wondered why the committee cannot be more creative:
“I personally do not like or listen to Lady Gaga’s songs (no offence to her fans cos it’s my personal opinion). I still prefer our NDP committee to come out with something original & local as this will be more meaningful than to copy either …the music or lyrics of some ‘foreign’ source. In actual fact, many of our homegrown music are actually very nice & gives more meaning when performed during NDP. It is not a nice feeling to be branded as a copycat by others, so it pays to be more original.”
With such excellent ‘publicity’ for NDP 2011, Singaporeans can consider saving their time and money to attend this year’s parade.
