The Ministry of Defence has put the ‘Fun Pack Song’, a rip-off from Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ on hold till permission is obtained from the publisher of the song and Lady Gaga’s recording company to modify its lyrics.
A video clip of last Saturday’s rehearsal for the National Day Parade which included the modified version of the song went viral in cyberspace with many netizens questioning whether the organizers have infringed on copyrights by illegally modifying and airing Lady Gaga’s song publicly.
In an embarassing U-turn, MINDEF spokesperson and chairman of the NDP show segment, Colonel Ong Tze-Ch’in said:
“We did not realise that the rights obtained did not include rights to modify the lyrics of the song. We are currently working to rectify this.”
The ditty has since become the butt of jokes among netizens.
Alan Leong wrote on TR’s Facebook:
“No wonder the merlion keeps vomiting in the background! Whoever the composer of this horrendous song should just jump into the marina bay reservoir.”
Ng Mei Yin added:
“Yeeee … That NDP 2011 Bad Romance Funpack Song sounds horribly. I hv goosebumps while listening. Such terribly written low quality lyrics. Even Gurmit Singh & Noose Suhaimi Yusof looked so ashamed & uneasy singing it.
