Boxing News

Local Coachella resident and boxer Randy Caballero was a huge fan of Nicaraguan boxing legend Alexis Arguello. Exactly two years to the day after Arguello’s death, Caballero followed in his footsteps by claiming a boxing title.
Caballero easily defeated challenger Alexis Santiago by unanimous decision to claim the WBC youth intercontinental super bantamweight title at Fantasy Springs resort on Friday night.
For Caballero, it’s his first title belt, and he knows exactly what he wants to do with it.
“This belt is going to stay around my waist for a long time,” Caballero told Leighton Ginn of the Desert Sun. “I’m going to party with this. I’m going to get my pants and make the belt loops a little bigger so I can wear it around my waist.”
Two of the three judges scored the fight 80-72 for Caballero, and a third scored it 79-73 for Caballero. It was his 12th victory without a loss, and will no doubt move him higher up in the rankings for the super bantamweight division.
Santiago was competitive throughout the eight-round bout, however he was unable to combat Caballero’s superior technique. Caballero clearly had heavier hands and was never seriously hurt by Santiago.
The bout, televised by Telefutura, offered viewers the chance to watch two up-and-comers do battle, and while Santiago may have dropped the decision, he still impressed with his ability to defend and with his strong technique. Ring TV believes that Santiago will have a bright future in the sport along with Caballero.
Caballero’s father Marcos, who is also his trainer, had previously indicated that his son will take a break after this bout after several grueling fights in a relatively short span of time.
The Coachella Valley now has two boxing champions—Cathedral City’s Timothy Bradley is the current WBC and WBO World Light Welterweight Champion.
