Anticipation for Marc Webb’s “The Amazing Spider-Man” is starting to heat up as the blockbuster prepares for its moment in the spotlight at Comic-Con. While Webb intends on bringing footage to the legendary Hall H on Friday, the “500 Days of Summer” director says its important that fans realize this is a different take on a classic superhero.
“Spider-Man has a lot of different incarnations in the comics. While there are certain mainstays — a kid who gets bitten by a spider, he’s an outsider, the death of his Uncle Ben helps endow [him] with the mentality of a hero — those things remain the same but there’s also room for interpretation,” Webb tell the L.A. Times.
And while Sony likely intends to unveil a splashy new trailer for the July 3, 2012 release, a grainy bootleg version has been making the rounds online this morning and confirms what Webb is saying.
We won’t link to the clip until its available in HD (though it would behoove the studio to release it now because, like with the “Dark Knight Rises” trailer from earlier this week, we’re just watching a crappy version of the intended clip and there’s no point in hiding a teaser that’s meant to drum up anticipation.)
But “Spider-Man” is coming, and Webb’s getting ready for the comparisons that will be made between his effort and Sam Raimi’s existing trilogy.
“One of the things we tried to do was keep the stunts more grounded physically and that was a huge challenge because you have a character whose abilities are superhuman. How do you do that in a way that’s convincing and real?” he discussed with the Times. “We spent months and months and months developing rigs so he could swing in a way that wasn’t computer-generated. Obviously there’s going to be enhancements and CG [sequences], but it’s based in a physical reality and that’s a new technique [for this film brand].
“When you walk out of the theater, I want the world you see to resemble what you saw on the screen,” Webb continued. “Part of the joy of cinema [is that] you make the impossible look real. I wanted it to be more grounded and more realistic and that went for the emotion of the scenes, the physical action and wardrobe. It’s less based in Steve Ditko world and probably closer visually and more influenced by ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ but it is also very much a world of our own devising.”
