The PGA Tour event in Hilton Head Island, S.C., has landed RBC as a sponsor for the next five years.
So what does that mean for the Detroit Golf Club's chances of landing a PGA Tour event? Not much, according to Detroit Golf Club spokesman Todd Flood.
"The Heritage having a sponsor does not close the door on Detroit hosting a tournament," he said Thursday. "We know the sponsor and the PGA are working diligently with putting this tournament together in Detroit."
The Detroit Golf Club has hosted PGA Tour officials and reportedly has secured a sponsor (Cadillac). Officials simply are waiting for a spot on the 43-event schedule to open.
There was speculation that opening could occur if the Heritage was unable to land a sponsor. When the event concluded April 24, tournament officials had not secured sponsorship for 2012.
Detroit Golf Club president Peter Walocko wrote in an April letter to club members a tournament was unlikely to happen at the club in 2012. Club officials still are hoping for a 2013 tournament date.
Michigan hasn't hosted a PGA Tour-sanctioned event since the last Buick Open, in Grand Blanc, in 2009.
The Heritage will be renamed the RBC Heritage through 2016. Boeing Co., which has opened a massive production plant in the state, will serve as a local sponsor.
RBC is the name used by the umbrella company that includes the Royal Bank of Canada and its subsidiaries.
The Heritage often is associated with the iconic lighthouse near the 18th green at Harbour Town Golf Links. It had been seeking a title sponsor since Verizon pulled out after last year's tournament.
The Heritage is one of South Carolina's few annual national sporting events, alongside NASCAR's Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway and the WTA's Family Circle Cup in Charleston.
