The PC Show 2011 runs from June 9 to 12. It will open daily from 12pm to 9pm. Admission is free.
HTC Flyer, $899
SEVERAL things about HTC's Flyer tablet (above) make you scratch your head when you read the specifications. Unlike most of the other new tablets on the market, it's powered by a processor with only one core - albeit a very fast one.
It also runs the Gingerbread version of Google's Android software meant for phones instead of the Honeycomb version made for tablets. And the original retail price of $1,068 is expensive.
But HTC has dropped the price to $899 for the Great Singapore Sale, which suddenly makes the Flyer excellent value for money.
The software is surprisingly good too. The key is HTC's Sense customisations, which make the Flyer one of the most intuitive tablets to use. The two best bits are an e-book widget that makes it really easy to use the Flyer as a reader, and the unique Evernote widget, which lets you easily take notes on the Internet storage service. You can even use the Flyer's stylus to draw on your notes, which makes the tablet one of the easiest ways to use the Evernote service.
That stylus is worth talking a bit more about. The so-called magic pen is more than a gimmick. You can easily tweak the way the stylus works by selecting different virtual nibs and brushes, and can also easily highlight blocks of text with it. Using the Flyer with the stylus explains why the touchscreen only measures 7 inches. Any bigger and you'd have trouble holding it with one hand for extended periods. Just don't expect to be able to use the stylus with tablets from other brands.
The Flyer will also be on sale at HTC distributor SIS Technologies' booth at the PC Show 2011, which runs from Thursday till Sunday at Suntec, where there will be lucky draw vouchers and giveaways with HTC purchases.
If you are in the market for an audiophile-grade iPod speaker dock, Geneva Labs' range of systems should definitely be on your shortlist. The Geneva Sound System Model L (above) isn't being discounted at the PC Show 2011, but it comes with a free 8GB Apple iPod Touch worth $328, which will make it a complete sound system out of the box. Check it out at the Sound Pavilion @ EpiCentre at the PC Show.
LG LW6500, $3,499 for 47-inch;
$4,999 for 55-inch
Gadget shows are always great opportunities to buy TVs because they tend to be discounted more deeply than other items. LG's LW6500 (above) comes in two sizes and lets you view 3-D programmes from relatively wide angles so that the entire family can enjoy a show at the same time. Buy one at the show and you will get four pairs of Cinema 3-D glasses, a Wi-Fi adapter and an LG Magic Motion remote control for free. Look out for discounted pricing closer to the start of the PC Show 2011, and visit LG's booth at the show.
Sony Ericsson Harry Potter-themed Spiro, $188
The budget Spiro phone (above) was launched last year, but a new limited-edition version with a Harry Potter Theme was released last month. It comes with a Harry Potter battery cover, and is also preloaded with a Harry Potter mobile game and wallpaper images. Since the Spiro is a Walkman phone, you also get easy access to your music.
