Ministry Of Education

Christchurch schools are being told to stay closed tomorrow after the latest quakes to hit the city.
The Education Ministry said in a statement it "strongly advised" schools and early childhood education (ECE) services in Christchurch City to remain closed tomorrow so management could make preliminary damage assessments.
At least 12 injured people were admitted to hospital and some buildings were damaged in the 5.5 and 6.0 magnitude quakes this afternoon. The shakes followed the February 22 quake which killed 181 people and one last September which caused severe damage.
The ministry said today's quakes had a serious impact on electricity, water, bridges and there had been extensive new liquefaction and some flooding.
"In these circumstances, safety is paramount. Any school that has a concern about damage should contact the Ministry phone for advice, Freephone 0800 225 580."
ECE services were told to seek a specialist assessment the same way they that was required for the February earthquake.
Board or management for schools in Selwyn and Waimakariri Districts would decide whether to open or close based on their own circumstances.
The ministry would issue further advice tomorrow afternoon.
