Lyme Disease

Although Lyme disease has been present in United Stares for about 30 years, but since 1995, the number of new Lyme disease cases reported to the State Health Department in United States has been tripled from 10,000 to 30000 each year.
Lyme disease transmitted through external parasites (ticks) reaches the most infectious stage of its life cycle during summer. The infection is caused by bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi transmits through deer tick bites, even if you are not in contact with a deer. They can easily crawl up into the skin of small animals and land directly into your backyard.
The western black legged tick, also called the dear tick is most commonly found in humid costal areas such as North Coast and on the slope of western Sierras.
What’s even alarming about the disease is that even the most competent physicians fail to make the correct diagnosis about the disease. This is due to two main reasons: The disease may persist even after the antibiotic therapy. The second and perhaps a more serious explanation for incorrect diagnosis is that active Lyme disease may occur even if the antibody tests are negative.
This condition, called false negative serology, is most common in people who receive antibiotics therapy very early in the treatment for the infection. Due to such incorrect diagnosis there are tens of thousands of Americans living with incompletely treated Lyme disease. However, if the disease is properly diagnosed and prompt treatment is give right from an early stage of the infection, improves the likelihood of being cured.
The tick bite is usually so small that that you may not be even aware of it. The infection may start showing its symptoms within days or may not occur for many weeks after being bitten. Typical symptoms include unexplained fatigue, fever or muscle pain. Some people even start going through a serious change in emotional or cognitive function. Since the laboratory tests can be imperfect or misleading, the possibility of Lyme disease should be carefully considered.
Studies have shown that the bacteria on entering the body accumulate in the lymph nodes of human beings, hindering the immune system from generating a response that protects the body from repeat infections. Due to the accumulation in lymph nodes, the symptoms of Lyme disease keep on surfacing even after the right treatment.
Considering the serious nature and an alarming rate with which the disease is spreading government has taken steps to provide awareness and has set up support groups in different cities for patients seeking medical help.
