SINGAPORE'S hopes of glory at the Li-Ning Singapore Open were extinguished at the quarter-final stage on Friday evening, as Gu Juan lost 17-21, 12-21 to world No.2 Wang Xin in just under a half hour.
The Singapore shuttler, ranked 26th in the world, was constantly a step behind her opponent from China, only leading twice throughout the match.
Meanwhile, world No.1 Wang Shixian had to save three match points against Juliane Schenk before beating the German 17-21, 21-15, 22-20.
With the victory, Wang booked a spot in Saturday's semi-final, where she will face 2008 winner Tine Baun of Denmark.
