Country's most effective journalist to cover crime and underworld, J Dey, was on Saturday shot dead outside his residence in Powai in Mumbai.
The senior crime reporter worked with Mumbai-based tabloid Mid Day as the Special Investigations Editor.
Journalist J Dey was attacked by four unknown assailants, of which two were bike-borne.
One of the bike-borne attackers opened fire from close range and shot five bullets. Three of them hit Dey.
The journalist was immediately rushed to the Hiranandani hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Dey had recently authored a book 'Zero Dial' on police informers.
He was apparently working on investigative stories about the oil mafia and had a couple of them lined up for publication in near future.
Talking to Dailybhaskar.com's Nishant Bhuse on Friday evening, he had said that he was also working on a book concerning the underworld and the oil mafia, and that his stories could make big revelations.
Dey had earlier written a book, 'Khallas', on the underworld lingo.
Reacting to the incident, Mid-Day editor Abhijit Majumder posted a tweet terming Dey as "the most knowlegdable, upright crime reporter".
Slamming the Mumbai Police, he posted a tweet saying: "Shame, Bombay police. A senior journalist like J Dey gets shot in the heart of city. Like of Dawood rule."
He further tweeted, "Police chief should resign over J Dey's death, and the long-inept state govt must answer some hard questions."
Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal, who was a good friend of Dey, told Dailybhaskar.com that he was shocked at the incident. Pointing that Dey had always been unbiased in his reporting, it needs to be confirmed if the attackers were from underworld, as even they respected his unbiased approach while covering underworld.
Suhel Seth also reacted to the incident on twitter, hitting out at Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.
He tweeted: "Terrible tragedy in Mumbai: journalist with Mid-Day shot dead. What kind of law and order does Prithiviraj Chavan believe in?"
"We keep blaming Dawood Ibrahim for everything in Mumbai: this is a wake up call: there are enough Dawoods in Mumbai that we must worry about."
