Guillain Barre Syndrome

Danny Wuerffel, who won the 1996 Heisman Trophy and led Florida to its first national championship, has been diagnosed with a rare disorder of the nervous system called Guillain-Barre syndrome.

He was diagnosed recently and has been undergoing treatment. He was released from a hospital on Wednesday. The treatment and location have been kept private. Wuerffel is the executive director of Desire Street Ministries, started to help the youth in New Orleans several years ago but since expanded to other locations.

“Fortunately, an early diagnosis identified the disease, permitting swift medical treatment,'' Desire Street Ministries Board Chairman Luder Whitlock said in a statement. "Consequently, his GBS specialist expects a full recovery. Meanwhile, Danny has asked me to express his appreciation for the prayers, love and support he has received during this time.''

Guillain-Barre can cause the body to attack its own immune system, causing muscle weakness, reflex loss, and numbness or tingling in the limbs.
