Green Lantern

Tomorrow The Green Lantern heads into theaters, but the question remains: Why should you check out this comic book adaptation rather than the other nine out this summer? It's an especially relevant question if you're not particularly up to date on the whole Green Lantern mythology… And seriously, even people who are can get lost in the comic's many retcons and retoolings. Lucky for you, we've once again cleverly anticipated your question and have five reasons why you should purchase a ticket to The Green Lantern, whether or not you're the type of person who cares about power rings.
The trailer has lots of explosions — Only a small number of people have any idea who Green Lantern is, let alone what his powers are or why he's fighting against evil. Frankly, though, that isn't what will be bringing people into theaters. No, the proof of the pudding is in the trailer, and Green Lantern's promises some explosive action — entertaining whether or not you know who the weird aliens are.
Ryan Reynolds was meant to be a superhero — Let's be honest, his involvement is the reason this movie got made, and we don't mean that it's because he's a super big actor. His performance as Deadpool was what made X-Men Origins: Wolverinetolerable. While this is obviously a very different role, Reynolds clearly understands superhero flicks.
Peter Sarsgaard plays Hector Hammond — Sarsgaard's name may be as unfamiliar to you as Hammond's, but it shouldn't be. He's one of the finest character actors in Hollywood and always seems just short of becoming a bona fide star. Casting him as the villain means the studio was serious about choosing a real performer, which is good because it can be difficult to emote anything with subtlety when your face is covered in 35 lbs. of makeup.
It's a DC Comics movie that's not about Batman/Superman — There have been a lot of movies adapted from DC Comics superheroes, but if you don't count ones about Batman or Superman then there's, umm, that Catwoman abomination from a few years back? Err... Jonah Hex, kind of? Well, uhh… Remember that movie Steel from 1997? No? That's pretty much it, and we're not convinced any of those movies should count.
Director Martin Campbell likes his movies shaken, not stirred — In the past two decades there have been only two truly great James Bond movies. Not coincidentally, both of them were directed by the same man directing The Green Lantern. We won't pretend all of Martin Campbell's pictures are great. While we haven't seen The Sex Thief, something tells us it wasn't Oscar-worthy — but you don't need to worry whether Campbell can do a good action movie.
