There's lots of cool music to talk about this week. So get out there and support your local (and all) musicians!
Cumberland County Fairgrounds: This doesn't technically constitute what I'd consider nightlife, but it's a jumpin' music fest in South Jerz so hopefully my editor will let me slide it into the column (she loves folk music, so we'll work on the assumption that she will).
It's the fifth annual Southern Shore Music Festival, which continues the tradition of the former Bridgeton Folk Festival. It runs from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and it's sponsored by WXPN. Headliner is Leon Russell, who plays at 6:30 p.m. Support local parklands! $30-$40. Kids younger than 12 enter free. Carmel Green Stage, 3001 Carmel Road, Millville. (800) 838-3006.www.southernshoremusicfestival.com
Battleship New Jersey: One of my favorite events of the summer is the Garden State Craft Brewer's Guild Annual Beer Festival, taking place from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday. Though I've been to more than 100 beer fests by now, I love this one because it's a chance to exhibit some hometown pride and to drink great beer on a humongous battleship. How awesome is that? Plus, ticket holders get to tour the battleship for free. There's live music and unlimited samples of the malty wares brewers in our home state are concocting. Support local brewers! $45. 62 Battleship Place, Camden. (856) 966-1652,www.njbeer.org
Mayo's Halfway House: Filed under the category of "Friendship has its Privileges," I'm proud to announce a gig performed by The Jugband, a seven-piece electric reggae and jam/classic-rock cover band that my dear friend Dana Smith from Audubon has recently joined as a backup vocalist. She has an awesome voice that I'm totally jealous of. Yes, Mayo is in the far eastern reaches of Burlington County, but other than the Phish caravan that rolls through Camden about twice a year, when else do you get to let your musical dreads down? Plus, it's The Jugband's first official gig of the year and they've been playing venues like World Cafe Live and Hard Rock Cafe for the past seven years. It's gonna be groovy, man. Show's at 10 p.m. Saturday. Support local friends! 112 New Jersey Route 72, Chatsworth. (609) 726-1360. www.thejugband.com H2O
Beach Club: I don't know that there will be a hotter event than the Risky Business Wetter is Better splash at 9 p.m. Saturday. The staff at the club is opening the hot tub and lounge pool to this DJ'ed gay bash and giving a $200 cash prize to the guy who's wearing the "riskiest" clothes. Um, skinny dipping, anyone? Support hot local gay men! $10-$15. 535 N. Route 73, West Berlin. (856) 767-7865, www.h2obeachclub.com
MIXX: In my view, Kid Rock's pretty bad-ass, spittin' out raw licks that are both catchy and lyrically engrossing. He's hosting his own afterparty at 10 p.m. Saturday, during which Rev Run and DJ Ruckus will be spinning. That's one hell of a mashup. Support the hybridization of musical genres at local venues! Borgata Hotel, Casino & Spa, 1 Borgata Way, Atlantic City.www.borgatanightlife.com
J.G. Cook's Carolina Blue: Owner Brad Cook is a super nice dude who rocks a very talented chef. All summer, they're grilling and grooving every Sunday with a music series that features a special Father's Day performance this week by Moe Fishbone (no relation to Moe or Fishbone) from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Buckets of Miller Lite are $10 and tall Dark and Stormy's are $5. Support local musicians (oh shoot, I used that one already). Alright, then. How about "Support local BBQ joints and their polite owners!" 692 Lambs Road, Pitman, (856) 582-8586, www.carolinabluerestaurant.com
The Moshulu: My favorite fine-dining restaurant aboard a ship moored in Philadelphia's harbor is the site of a "Big Gay Boat Party" from 6 to 11 p.m. Sunday. Sister's Nightclub and PhillyGayCalendar are throwing the affair, which reveals itself on the top deck. Shot girls and guys keep the party lubricated. Support your local gay community's efforts to raise money for GLBT services by partying on a boat! $10. 401 S. Columbus Blvd., Philadelphia. (215) 923-2500.
Washington Lake Park: Fran Smith Jr., bass player for The Hooters, is joining cover band Last Exit on stage for a few songs as part of the Washington Township Summer Concert in the Park Series at 7 p.m. Wednesday. That's an honor, huh? Support your local famous rockers playing with local cover bands! 626 Hurfville-Cross Keys Road, Sewell.http://twp.washington.nj.us
McFadden's Ballpark: The Kisses for Kyle Foundation (a childhood-cancer-services organization) is throwing a Block Party at 6 p.m. Thursday with special appearances by sports figures Larry Bowa, Greg "The Bull" Luzinski, Jay Johnstone and Michael Barkann. A steel-drum band and a $25 open-bar and buffet ($5 for kids) warm up the crowd before the Cardinals game viewing at 8:15 p.m. Support your local cancer charities and baseball teams! 1 Citizens Bank Way, Philadelphia. (215) 952-0300. www.mcfaddensballpark.com
McFadden's Third Street: McFadden's U. Summer School is compulsory for student party-goers who miss pulling the all-nighters of the school year. Every Thursday from 8 p.m. to the following morning, the reward for studying includes $2 well drinks and $1 Bud Lights. Support your local coed! 461 N. 3rd St., Philadelphia. (215) 928-0630.
