Always Kabhi Kabhi Review

Story: The story revolves around four teens of St. Marks School Sameer (Ali Fazal), Nandini (Zoa Morani), Tariq Naqvi (Satyajeet Dubey), Aishwarya Dhawan (Giselle Monteiro). The school is full of bright teenagers looking to make a mark on the world. It’s about their school life, love and the craze of one's first-ever crushes and problems related to youth. They are different from each other but all come together to convey a message to their parents.
Story treatment: There is no question of denying the fact that Bollywood is going young with younger themes as it appeals to the masses. However, ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ reminds one of ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘Shaitan’ in patches when it comes to teen based issues like parents pressure for admission, youngsters in trouble because of corrupts police, though this time in a milder way. What goes wrong with the flick? Its youth based but not enough to keep one hooked to it and lacks twist and turns in the concept. Dramatic incidents in their lives and the way they find a Youngistan solution to it, is also tasteless.
Star Cast: It’s a launching pad for Zoa Morani who manages to look and sound confident. The actress definitely has a caliber to perform but devoid of typical heroine material. Giselle Monterio struggles with her part and her beauty fails to wrap her expressionless face. Ali Fazal who earlier played Joy Lobo in ‘3 Idiots’ is simply ok. Satyajeet Dubey is impressive with his innocence and surely promises B’town its next chocolate boy. Other potential actors like Satish Shah, Lilette Dubey and Vijay Raaz are wasted due to poorly defined characterization. Navneet Nishan plays her part well.
Direction: First time director Roshan Abbas tries to make the story identifiable by the youth but dragged second half takes away the interest in it. The story is so predictable that the director couldn’t pull any elements of excitement in it. Roshan has indisputably induced the youthful ingredient in the film but showing the teenagers making excessive use of mobile phone, getting hooked to facebook and using sms language.
Dialogues / Cinematography / Music: Dialogues have a flavor of teenagers but falls flat to leave an impact. Music is forgettable but ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ the title track and SRK’s ‘Antenna’ is melodious. Cinematography is fine and has managed to capture the energetic ambience of school.
3 Ups and 3 Downs: SRK’s fans who can endure anything to watch him in a video can risk buying a ticket. If you want to re-visit teen days without any decent expectations ‘Always Kabhi Kabhi’ will turn out to be an ok experience. We suggest always think before kabhi kabhi pushing yourself towards theatre as it has little to offer.
