AICTE

AICTE
Rajasthan government has asked All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the advisory and statutory body for technical education system in the country, to suspend giving approvals to new engineering and management colleges in the state for next two to three sessions.

The state principal secretary for technical education Vipin Chandra Sharma told ET that the over capacity of engineering and management colleges is hampering the development of technical education in the state. "For the last two more than 6000 management and over 5000 engineering seats have been falling vacant. Even offering direct admissions is not able to improve the situation for these colleges.

This is widening the demand and supply gap in technical education. We have asked AICTE to hold permissions for new colleges in the state," he said. At present, Rajasthan has 133 management colleges with 10,580 seats and 122 engineering colleges with over 50,000 seats. Besides, presence of around 20 private universities in the state is only worsening the situation.

"We have received closure request from various management colleges which are not able to get admissions. There are institutes in remote areas which are being operated even from garage, leave aside infrastructural facilities. If we don't apply requisite measures, the situation will go out of hand," he said.
