The San Francisco Giants braced themselves for official word that they have lost the player Miguel Tejada called “the last guy we want to lose” for an extended period of time and the agent for that player was calling for a rule change.
Catcher Buster Posey, the National League Rookie of the Year suffered a serious leg injury — Amy Gutierrez of Comcast SportsNet Bay Area reported Posey has “a broken leg and torn ligaments” — on a collision with Scott Cousins at the at the plate Wednesday night in the Florida Marlins’ 7-6, 12-inning victory.
“Scary,” Miguel Tejada said in a funereal postgame clubhouse. “Right now he’s the last guy we want to lose.”
Posey’s left leg bent awkwardly on the collision and he writhed in pain. He was helped off by Giants trainers and put no pressure on the leg. Posey’s agent called for a change in the rules Thursday morning (viaESPN).
“You leave players way too vulnerable,” Jeff Berry said. “I can tell you Major League Baseball is less than it was before [Posey’s injury]. It’s stupid. I don’t know if this ends up leading to a rule change, but it should. The guy [at the plate] is too exposed.
“If you go helmet to helmet in the NFL, it’s a $100,000 fine, but in baseball, you have a situation in which runners are [slamming into] fielders. It’s brutal. It’s borderline shocking. It just stinks for baseball. I’m going to call Major League Baseball and put this on the radar. Because it’s just wrong.”
Cousins felt he had no choice but to hit Posey and score the winning run.
“I don’t know if I’m going to be welcome home [Cousins is from San Francisco] as much any more, but it’s a baseball play,” Cousins said. “I feel bad for Buster Posey. I hope he’s okay. I’m going to send a message over there to him. I’m not trying to end anybody’s season or anything like that.”
Said Manager Bruce Bodhy: “As a catcher, you know what it’s like. You’re the only guy on the field they can run into. When you see him laying there, it’s not a good feeling for him, his teammates or anybody.”
