Rashard Mendenhall |
Thanks to Twitter and, more generally, a little thing I like to call "The Internet," athletes now have the opportunity to give us unfettered access to their inner thoughts. While you might be surprised by the vapid nature of most of their statements (or not), every once in a while athletes will give us pure gold in 140 characters or fewer. Take Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall, for example. With the lockout in full swing, football players have more time than ever to share their inner thoughts, which is especially entertaining when some piece of news explodes the Internet. Like Osama bin Laden's death, for example.
Mendenhall began sounding off in a controversial manner when news of bin Laden's death broke. Here are some of his tweets:
“What kind of person celebrates death? It's amazing how people can HATE a man they have never even heard speak. We've only heard one side...”
“We'll never know what really happened. I just have a hard time believing a plane could take a skyscraper down demolition style”
“I believe in God. I believe we're ALL his children. And I believe HE is the ONE and ONLY judge.”
“For those of you who said you want to see Bin Laden burn in hell and piss on his ashes, I ask how would God feel about your heart?”
“There is not an ignorant bone in my body. I just encourage you to#think”
OK, Rashard Mendenhall, I'll think. I'm thinking that Rashard Mendenhall should take a break from Twitter for a while. To give readers some context, here's a sample tweet from Mendenhall before news of bin Laden's death became public:
“Whenever you see a man and wonder "why hes with her?" it's cause she do things that you won't! #NASTY”
He's got a point there. Thank you, Rashard Mendenhall.
