It is going to be the first time in 35 years that a US President who is currently in office has went to Puerto Rico. President Barack Obama was invited to visit and will come next month. This trip would make Barack Obama the first sitting president that has come to the US Commonwealth in decades according to the island’s governor.
This US President campaigned in Puerto Rico for the Democratic primaryand is going to visit the island June 14 according to governor Luis Fortuno. He said this without telling specifics of what the US President would be doing. “With his visit, the president makes good on the promise he made during the presidential primaries in 2008 that he would return to Puerto Rico as president,” Fortuno said in a statement.
December 1961 was when President John F. Kennedy stopped on the island and that was the last official presidential visit. President Gerald Ford did however host an economic summit in Puerto Rico in June 1976.
