In a time when boys and young men seem to be going in the wrong direction, the Annual Falcons' Boys' Conference is a light in the midst of apparent darkness.
The conference is in its fourth year and is set for May 21 at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The theme for this year's conference is 'Fathers and Sons together,' and falls in line with the overall idea of the conference since its inception, which is "building youth is better than mending men."
Guest speaker for this year's conference is pastor Ivan Carey, from Victory Baptist Church in Nassau.
"At this year's conference, we will be having several very special honorees," said Darren Rolle, founder and organizer of the conference.
"We will be honoring people like Sir Albert Miller and Sonny Waugh for the many years of contributing to the many sporting and social events for young men throughout The Bahamas.
"We will also be honoring several service clubs here in Grand Bahama that sometimes go unnoticed for their service above self. These clubs include Rotary, Kiwanis, Pilot and Lion's Clubs."
Rolle noted that this year's conference will also honor four outstanding female educators who have taught in the education system for over
100 years (combined service), namely Daisy McPhee, Myrton King, Lin Glinton and Anita Doherty.
"These ladies have over the many years assisted in molding many of the leading young men in this community through education," added Rolle.
This year's conference will also take on a different look as industrial companies in the community have been invited to showcase the offering of their companies, which will give young men in the community an opportunity to consider possible employment with one of the companies which will be represented.
Rolle is also hoping that with the companies involved at the conference, a number of the boys will consider taking up classes and pursuing a career in the industrial field.
The companies expected to showcase at the conference include – Freeport Container Port, Polymers, PharmaChem, VOPAK, Statoil South Riding Point and the GB Shipyard.
"We are living in a community where we are not doing a very good enough job in preparing young men to become very good fathers, and consequently very good role models and future fathers," said Rolle, during a recent press conference at the Tabernacle Church.
"So, the objective of this conference has always been to offer instruction and some guidance for our boys, so that when they do grow into men, they will be well-grounded."
Rolle said that in addition to the speakers, there will be a number of giveaways and special prizes for participants.
