Born in Chicago, Mrs Shriver is the second child of Robert Sargent Shriver, a politician and activist who was behind the creation of the Peace Corps and served as the American ambassador to France.
Her mother was Eunice Kennedy Shriver, John F Kennedy’s sister and a vocal supporter of the pro-life movement.
Born into a political family, Mrs Shriver has been a strong advocate of people with learning disabilities and is a member of the International Board of the Special Olympics.
As California’s first lady, she has championed the role of women and turned the California’s Conference on Women into an enormous event attracting 30,000 attendees and 150 world and business leaders.
Her work to encourage more community programmes and volunteering has also won her widespread admiration. Her WE Connect programme, founded in 2005, has provided more than a million meals to Californian families through the state’s Food Banks association.
She is also the co-chair of the California Museum for History, Women and the Arts and created the California Hall of Fame in 2006.
