Casey Anthony Trial

On May 9, 2011, the Casey Anthony trial moved from Orlando, Florida to Tampa Bay as jury selection began in Clearwater, Florida.  Casey Anthony has been booked into the Pinellas County Jail as debate has ensued regarding how long jury selection will last.  Casey Anthony has been charged with first degree murder in the death of her then 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie Anthony.  Caylee was missing for approximately 30 days before her grandmother, Cindy Anthony, called 911 to report her disappearance.  Casey Marie Anthony is not only charged with murdering Caylee, but the prosecution contends that she drove her vehicle while Caylee’s deceased body was in the trunk of her car.  After a six month search for Caylee, her remains were found on December 11, 2008.  An exact cause of death has not been given and Casey Anthony has plead not guilty to charges of murder.
Casey Anthony was housed in the Pinellas County Jail on Mother’s Day and rejected a visit from her own mother, Cindy Anthony.  Casey has refused visits with her parents repeatedly since early jailhouse visits were televised on national media.  It is unclear whether Casey Anthony’s relationship is strained to the extent she is refusing to visit with her parents or if she is acting upon the advice of her attorneys including Jose Baez.
Though jury selection began on May 9, 2011 it wasn’t without its attempts from the defense to prolong the procedures.  Several last minute motions requested by the defense were rejected, including a motion to strike the jury panel and continuance.  There will be twenty jurors selected as well as eight alternates.  Judge Perry plans to have the jury panel selected and transported back to Orlando, Florida where they will be sequestered throughout the duration of the trial in time for the official start of the trial on May 17, 2011.
