A leader in the outdoor recreation merchandise business, Cabela's expanded its brick-and-mortar breadth by opening its first store in Springfield, Oregon on Thursday, April 5, 2011 at 4 p.m. at the Gateway Mall. Cameron Hanes of the Outdoor Channel's, “The Elk Chronicles,” was on hand for the grand opening ceremony.
In 2004, Cabela's went public and soared to become one of the most popular retailers of hunting, fishing, camping and other related outdoor equipment. Their stores have a cavernous appearance that makes shoppers feel like the outdoors was brought inside.
On Thursday, the Register Guard reported a crowd of around 1,000 pressed against the front door during the grand opening of the first Cabelas in Oregon.
In an unconventional grand opening ceremony, superstar hunter Cameron Hanes broke the ribbon with a black compound bow and arrow. He practiced short shots for a half hour at the Cabela's archery range before the grand opening.
The shoppers were then allowed into the store in groups of about 20 to 50. The company had 240 employees on hand with an additional 40 workers from their stores in Utah, Montana and Colorado. The Gateway Mall brought in 13 additional security people and Cabela's hired three off-duty Springfield police to keep order.
It took nearly a half hour to let all the people into the new Calbela's store. The aisles were jammed with people shopping and applying for the instant Cabela's CLUB Visa credit card. Favorite offerings include pink guns and fishing rods just for women, tents and other related camping equipment for spring and summer adventures.
Cabela's enjoyed first quarter profits this year totaling $17.8 million. During the first quarter of 2010, the company reported earnings of $8.1 million. Cabela's popularity is quickly increasing, creating a need for more brick-and-mortar stores besides its thriving mail order business.
Cabela's chief executive officer, Tommy Millner, said the product areas with the strongest sal trends were hunting apparel, firearms and women's and children's.
According to KVAL, the grand opening ceremony is only the beginning of the festivities planned this weekend at the new Springfield Cabela's. Television personalities and hunting and fishing experts will appear at the store for a variety of programs including Troy and Jacob Landry of the History Channel's “Swamp People.” Special programs will continue until May 10.
This year Cabela's also celebrates its 50th anniversary. They will hold several giveaways starting on the grand opening day and running through May 15. Over $35,000 in prizes will be awarded including an Alaskan fishing trip, an elk hunting trip to New Mexico and a Cabela's drift boat.
On April 14, Cabela's opened a store in Allen, Texas. Another new Cabela's store is planned this summer in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
