Wee Siew Kim |
Mr Lee spoke at a community event soon after Mr Wee, an incumbent MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, announced that he will not contest the next election.
Said PM Lee: "Mr Wee has been a very good MP for two terms. He has established himself as an MP who cares for his residents, can solve problems and get things done for them.
"Mr Wee has also been a valuable member of my GRC team. He was Town Council chairman for a term and even after stepping down as Town Council chairman he has helped to do many GRC projects."
MP Wee has had a long illustrious career with ST Engineering. A Stanford University graduate, he was president of its Europe division from 2001 to 2002, and of its defence business from 2002 to 2004 and as deputy chief executive as well from 2004 to 2009.
There was a blip in 2006 when his 18-year-old daughter, Shu Min, made inappropriate comments in her online blog. She criticised another blogger for being "old" and "under motivated" after he wrote in his blog that the Government should try to be more understanding of Singaporeans' employment woes.
Many on the Internet slammed her for her remarks. She subsequently shut down her blog and was later counselled by her tutor at Raffles Junior College. Mr Wee defended her and his comments drew further criticism. He later apologised for his action.
