NFL Draft 2011 |
Despite this, every so often I come across a mock draft that has the Bengals taking a defensive player, such as Robert Quinn or Da'Quan Bowers, rather than a quarterback or wide receiver. To me, this move by the Bengals would make no sense.
To start with, the defensive line is not that big a position of need. Yes, Antwan Odom has had health issues, but if he is healthy in 2011, and if Michael Johnson continues to impress, then you end up with that first-round rookie on the bench.
When the first player you draft is on the bench and you're selecting in the top ten, if that player's not a quarterback then something is amiss. Besides, while Quinn would be a good fit anywhere, it doesn't matter how good their defense is if the offense is in shambles.
The Bengals have a rather easy draft when you think about it. Grab Green in the first round, pick a quarterback in the second, and work from there. If they want a defensive end that badly, there will be good ones available in the third round.
