French-American naturalist and artist John James Audubon has had what would have been his 226th birthday celebrated with the latest Google Doodle today.
Audubon, who was born on April 26 1785, is best remembered for his extensive cataloguing and painting of North American birds.
The Doodle created by Google to celebrate his birthday is made up of 10 birds perched on a series of branches and organised in a way that spells out the search engine’s name.
Unlike recent Doodles, such as the ones to mark Yuri Gagarin’s first space flight and the birthday of Jules Verne, today’s graphic is a relatively simple design with no moving parts or animation.
Clicking on the bird graphic simply brings up a list of search results for John James Audubon plus recent news related to the naturalist.
While perhaps not a household name today, Audubon is seen as a hugely important figure within the world on ornithology and last December a copy of his book ‘Birds of America’ sold at auction for £7.3million – a record price for a single printed book.
Audubon moved to the US aged 18 and lived in America until his death aged 65 on January 27 1851.
