The 23-year-old Australian birdied three of the first five holes Saturday, including a brilliant, twisting putt from the front of the fifth green.
Day kept up his sizzling play from the second round, when he shot an 8-under 64 to match the best round ever by a Masters rookie. With three more birdies, he pushed his score to 11 under and snatched the lead from Rory McIlroy, who was even through five holes.
Tiger Woods started the day three shots off the lead, but he was scuffling early on. At 1 over through six holes, he was five shots back.
Bubba Watson posted the best of the early scores with a 67. Adam Scott also surged up the leaderboard — 5 under through 14 holes to move within four strokes of Day.
