The high cost of hitting the gas pump these days has some drivers putting it off as long as possible. According to the Automobile Association of American for the Mid-Atlantic region, more drivers are now calling for roadside assistance after running out of gas.
These calls are up 20 percent compared to this time last year, AAA says. Drivers are trying to get the most for their money, and running their vehicles for miles after the gas light comes on, according to the organization.
But waiting until the last minute to gas up could ultimately cost drivers more than if they put fuel in their tanks sooner, AAA officials warn. Running your vehicle on low fuel could cause sediment in the bottom of the tank, or could clog the fuel tanks, fuel filter or fuel injectors and lead to some expensive repairs.
The organization recommends that drivers fill up when they get down to a quarter of a tank.
