I went to a group art shows in recent weeks, and I want to talk in the coming days. But since this is the first time that I do in this column, I'm talking about is the difficulty of doing this: If you have two or three dozen pieces, and a few hundred words, all you can do is just some to name immediately came to the front. But this is not the way to buy art, because the experience of seeing a work of art for a while, is very different from the experience of living with one. They will be promptly won by one or two pieces, but a few days later, not much for you, but very unexpected tickle your curiosity to buy.
John Waters talks about his art collection in his recent book "Role Models" and he calls his collection of his "comrades". I like art that is controversial in any way - "ready to fight," he exclaims, as he the kind of things people can not believe that someone is taking seriously the art, such as obsessive graphomania, illegible Cy Twombly. But if you had to develop a piece at a time, regardless of the bizarre, a familiarity with the work, and a new appreciation. Twombly's work can reveal the unexpected depths, while the work was more attractive at times, you can immediately begin to feel flat and uninteresting. See the "50/50" show currently at the Walker, where the customer picked a few pieces of art for display and the conservatives gathered the rest. Trends collected numerous pieces of very good, but the commissioners raised some very unexpected. If you spend a lot of time with art, you feel great affection for the finer points, and he is willing to share parts of it are interesting, but will be missed if someone is willing to spend time with them.
But not if you a quick overview of a group exhibition. And so I'll have to mention a few pieces here and what caught my attention immediately, and will probably miss something that I madly in love with her, fell one point. So, with that reservation, we will start.
It is an annual presentation of the visual arts students at the University of Minnesota Gallery Katherine E. Nash, called "naga", short for North American Graduate Art Studio. (The opening is on Friday.) I like pretty art student, often a kind of punk rock, the quality of the institution, or is somehow totally of a certain movement of the past influences and is generally very dark. This gives both the shock to get the new and the shock of oblivion, and both are quite pleasant.
Probably says something about me that is one of the first pieces to jump on me a series of two photos by Leah Grimaldi School of Fine Arts from Vermont, or "Party" and "authorized party over". Both have odd angles and a bit overexposed to find as many photos of the semi-anonymous in the gossip sites online, where someone came up with a very bright flash in a room too dark for pictures dancer and naive embrace couples and people vomiting. The first photo of the series shows a scantily clad woman leaning, as if her heel was broken and she has the floor.
The second shows down the legs of a woman with money, turn to pick something with her handbag. Both are perfect facsimiles of photos of the party, but for one thing: There are strange creatures such as protozoa, in pictures, stuffed animals may have children, perhaps out of sticks and vegetables (which is very difficult to say.) Seem dumped by the dress of first wife and the pool of the plant and the beer is poured and stomach bile in the second enhances the portfolio of women as if they had been sick. This is not a party until someone spills their nighmarish single-celled organisms!
Too bad, it's a few pieces of Lindsey Beal, University of Iowa, both of a series called "reproduction". Beal has created what appears to samples of wallpaper, decoration and wallpaper is colorful abstract paintings. But a closer examination, the images are not abstract at all - are cervical cap and diaphragm. When I read the Museum of Sex in New York, dozens of pieces of this kind, including clothes from condoms and sex toys and sculptures had been visited, and it is good to know that the New York population of Iowa are for inventions of mankind Latex look glamorous and just as I ask myself what could it look like on my wall?
It is a piece of Noah's California College of Arts Krell, which is a kind of timeless quality of it. This is a video entitled "To a body (Piggyback) move" and is simply a young woman dressed in stiff lead to a well-dressed young man in the back. You an urban environment, apparently for hours with the young woman who looks exhausted and the young do not That's the kind of piece you can walk away from someone to do it any time -. is so simple in its design and. Enforcement, it is also irresistible, especially when you imaging what had happened in the minds of the youth first, I imagine his thoughts. "It's much more work than I expected ... How long should I wear ... I think I sprained something ... why did I agree to this ..?. Not that this is only forJanet Biggs ... a piece by a student! "
I was not touching them with a cotton yarn and hook angle iron mica Rachel Weiss San Francisco Art Institute, as strange, "hole". It looks like a burlap sack someone like a caterpillar levied on agriculture. Is at least as high as the average person, and should open the bag is something like the creature in the mouth, or hole in question. Seems like a shuffle forward Swamp of a horror movie of the 80s. I do not know what Mrs. White really intend to convey through the room - it could probably seem a robust and clothing of a monk that can be used, or even drop a bag in the middle. Art creates surprising combinations, depending on the viewer. I see horror movies.
The last piece I mentioned unexpectedly without seeming creepy horror film that reference. Created in April New Girlfriend Dean of the College of Arts and Design, called "shape", seems at first glance a simplified black and white plush two gloves. But Dean is planning a second image of the first glove, this time in motion, so that in the presentation, the hair on the glove of contraction, as if the wind blew through them. The painting is haunted by a wind, can not feel, but you can see, and if you go murals on your own? In short, you feel none of the pieces can be animated in the gallery, and who knows, maybe I could. When this happens, I recommend steering clear of the larva of burlap.
